Birds forage on a freshly ploughed field near Beaumont Hamel, which 100 years ago was the frontline of the battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles of the first world war with more than a million casualties over 141 days. The centenary of the end of the war will be marked on Sunday with services of remembrance by people around the world.
