Millions of lives will be at risk


The Thai-Myanmar border, where decades of civil unrest and recurrent episodes of conflict have taken their toll, is a notoriously difficult area to conduct malaria research. The malaria parasite’s resistance to current drug treatments poses a serious global health threat. If resistance spreads from Asia to the African sub-continent, or emerges in Africa on its own, millions of lives will be at risk, most of them children in Africa under five, according to the Wellcome Trust.
